Fun Around Sport

It is the fifth season that my family has been involved with speed skating, all with the Saskatoon Lions Speed Skating Club.  I am a typical speed skating parent who loves to watch their kids skate and keeps coming back because “they” love it, but in truth it is speed skating that has made us feel at home in Saskatchewan.  Yes, it brings great joy to watch my kids skate, but it is the friendships they have formed and that my husband and I have formed that brings us the most happiness.

If you have ever had a conversation with me, you have probably heard me tell the story of my oldest daughter (I will call her Ceili) being devastated after a race at her first meet.  She barely knew anyone, so she had time to dwell on her race.  By the next meet, she had made friends, and although she fell, it wasn’t devastating because it was the time in between races that she got to have fun with her new friends. I know both my girls love to skate (I will call the other one Kiera), but it is the friendships they have made over the years that keep them excited about skating early in the morning or at -35 in the wind.

I laugh at myself because when I take pictures, it is the ones off the ice that mean the most to me.  Don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate those truly great pictures while they’re skating, but it is the pictures off the ice that tell the stories of the friendships and true fun that is the sport of speed skating.
