Introduction for coaches and athletes

The Sports Medicine and Science Council of Saskatchewan (SMSCS) has granted speed skating "enhanced service" to build our integrated support team (IST) for high performance skaters leading up to the CWG 2019. This is a summary of how we will use the enhanced support.

The proposal is to identify two groups of skaters in the province:

  1. The identified top skaters in the province would receive support for one-on-one consulting and gathering data in the following areas.

    • Junior and above

    • In province

    • Participating in annual training (early stages)

    • Identified by coaches and PC as having demonstrated potential

    • participating in resistance training

    • Competing in and out of province

    • These skaters and invited others will be invited to take part in two sport science days, the first being at Craven Sport Services in Saskatoon the day prior to Fast is Fun, Friday, August 21, 2015.  The second one is in the planning stage but would be at Level 10 in Regina in the spring of 2016.  Any athlete in this group will receive this support until Feb., 2019.  Please note again that other athletes will come into this program as they get better, older or identified athletes fail to meet the criteria.  Support will come in the following areas

    • Physical testing

    • Mental training

    • Nutrition

    • Resistance training (group)

    • Sport medicine (primarily coaches)

    • B.  Train to train skaters competing in and out of province

  2. A larger group of train to train (group B) skaters be exposed to group sessions in all of following areas as well. This would primarily happen, as it does now, at training camps and competitions.

High performance coaches will have the opportunity to attend sports medicine sessions as outlined in the document below.

    Proposal

    Targeted Group

Targeted groups would be defined as Learn to Compete (15-18) and Train to Train (12-14).  There will be a relatively small number of L2C athletes initially (10) more T2T skaters (20). One coach per club (4) for each of the groups are also targeted.
